How to apply Wall Decals
When you’ve purchased and received your wall decal, the next step is to apply it to the wall space you want to decorate. Follow these simple steps to apply your vinyl decals without any error or issue. Your purchase will also come with a visual of the application process.
First you need to prep your wall space
Our Decals are made from vinyl. They cling best to enamel painted walls that have been cured for at least three (3) weeks or more. Therefore, if you recently painted your walls, the best time to apply decals is after 3 weeks. The best wall paint that ensures a proper decal installation is semi-gloss or gloss enamel paints. Latex paints and paints that are VOC are also less than ideal to apply decals onto because the substances in the paint prevent the vinyl from adhering properly to the wall.
Make sure that the wall is free from dust, cobwebs or other surface dust. Wipe your wall to clean any dust or particles that could inhibit the vinyl from sticking properly.
Prepare your vinyl
The vinyl decals come in three layers. The top layer is the transfer tape (through which you can see the lettering) which means it is a transparent film. The middle layer is the lettering itself and the bottom layer is the backing paper. When you have unboxed your vinyl from it’s shipping package, make sure it is properly flattened out before attempting to stick it on the wall. Rub across the top transfer layer to so that the letters will stick better to the this layer.
Application
- Rub the letters unto the wall using an item with a hard but gentle edge. You can use a wide popsicle stick, plastic scraper, credit card or anything similar. Rub the transfer sheet out from the center first and work your way to the outer edges in this motion.
- Peel off the transfer tape (top layer) and your job is done. If you are experience trouble peeling off the transfer tape or if the vinyl is not properly stuck to the wall hold it flat again and apply more pressure to get it to adhere firmly to the wall.

Some decals may come in one long strip and others may be small individual letters to align and apply. It all depends on the design you have chosen but the same method of installation applies. While we have a wide range of decal designs and color options, for personalised options, we can only provide colors on our color chart. We do not produce gradient designs, photo elements or very small text or details because our decals are cut from colored vinyl.
Decals will also adhere easily to glass surfaces or most any surface that is hard, flat and non-porous. If you have a textured wall, we recommend using the Tennis Ball Method where you take a tennis ball to roll or rub over the vinyl so that it will adhere to dips and bumps on the wall surface. Also peel the transfer layer away slowly with textured walls and use your finger to “help” the letters come away from the transfer layer to the wall as decals don’t like to stick to textured surfaces as easily.
How to remove wall decals
For a quick and easy way to peel your decals off the wall, use a blow dryer to heat/warm up the letters before peeling them off. The heat will soften the vinyl and make it easier to peel off without damaging your wall paint.
Decals are a one-time use product, so they are removable, but not repositionable. Thankfully they are an inexpensive way to add class to your walls, so when you re-paint you can choose a new quote!

How long do wall decals last?
Artsy Spot decals are a (3) three-year film and can be removed cleanly for up to two (2) years after it’s been applied to your wall. They can last much longer than this however! This indoor wall vinyl has a matte surface which reduces unwanted reflection. If you don’t apply your decals right after purchasing, they can be safely stored in a clean, dry area not exposed to extreme heat or cold and preferably on a flat surface. The longer the vinyl stays unused however, can mean that it will become more difficult to remove the transfer paper.
